Alternative Economic Spaces

Capitalism is everywhere? not only in corporations and on Wall Street, but also in our schools, our homes, our food. It seems we cannot escape! In the news, academic journals and activist calls, we are constantly reminded of the role capitalism plays in our lives and the dominance of capitalist power relations.

But what would it mean to think differently? Instead of tracing and retracing the same tired lines of capitalism, of financial flows and exploitation, showing how capitalism reaches into every corner of our lives, what if we were to create different maps? Maps of possibilities, of spaces and activities that are not capitalist, where non-capitalist economic practices flourish, and maps of the diverse economic practices and cultural economies that constitute 'the economy'.

In 3Cs, we not only map alternative economic spaces on paper, we work to create those spaces in our daily lives, from helping to found a Really Really Free Market to practices of mutual aid and care.

Some 3Cs activities in this realm:
-Map of alternative economies in the disOrientation Guide
-Drift of alternative economic spaces with Maggie from Precarias a la Deriva
-Facilitated mapping of edible plants and urban farms in the 2008 Community Cartographies Convergence
